Declare and Clarify the Setting Process of Legal Service Center for Indigenous Peoples by Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP)

  • 更新時間:2016/11/25 09:12:50

Yesterday (November 7), it’s reported that the President Tsai promised to establish the Legal Service Center for Indigenous Peoples but Council of Indigenous Peoples(CIP) “washed its hands of the matter”. The CIP issues the news release in particular to clarify the setting process of Legal Service Center and says, “That news is different from the fact!”

The CIP says, for implementing the promise of President Tsai, the council consulted with Legal Aid Foundation (LAF) on September 7, 2016 to determine that the required expenditure is paid for Legal Service Center by Judicial Yuan, the related projects are proposed by LAF and the CIP takes responsibility to verify and approve the project funds and communicate with local government to find proper public property as the workplaces.

The CIP expresses that LAF received the news last week that the Judicial Yuan agreed to afford the expenses of equipment and hardware. In addition, the CIP not only takes charge of the expenses of related personnel but also promotes with LAF to prepare and arrange the following affairs of Legal Service Center.

The CIP particularly explains that for maintaining the judicial rights and interests of indigenous people, the council has signed a contract with LAF since 2011 that the LAF provides professional services including legal advice, advocacy, document draft for indigenous people and CIP subsidizes counsel fee, correlative charges for employing legal assistants and business expenses.

The CIP particularly mentions the budget in recent three years to show that the total budget for legal aid is 83,000,000 NTD and the number of supporting cases has been over 5595. In the next year, it will aid another 37,000,000 NTD to provide over 2,000 personal aid cases.

Finally, the CIP says, the council provides the legal aid services for indigenous people for years and cooperates with LAF to promote the establishment of Legal Service Center. The news reported that CIP turned a deaf ear to the establishment of Legal Service center is obviously inconsistent with the fact.
