Strengthening Austronesian Exchange - the Chairman of the Council of Indigenous Peoples and the Minister of the Ministry of Culture and Interior of the Republic of Marshall Islands Signed the Austronesian Cultural Cooperation Agreement

The Chairman of the Council of Indigenous Peoples and the Minister of the Ministry of Culture and Interior of the Republic of Marshall Islands signed the Austronesian Cultural Cooperation Agreement today. The parties convened a “signing conference press” in Taipei, and the Agreement was signed by Icyang, the Chairman of the Council, and Amenta Matthew, the Minister of the Ministry of Culture and Interior of the Republic of Marshall Islands on behalf of the governments. The press conference was kicked off with the traditional blessing ceremony of the Amis People. Following the signing ceremony, Chairman Icyang and Minister Matthew Amenta enjoyed the singing and dance performances to show the rich culture of Austronesian Peoples.

Chairman Icyang said that, on the basis of reciprocity, exchanges and cooperation in various fields, such as language and culture, traditional knowledge and skills, economy and sports, as well as the issue of climate change was also included in the agreement. Both sides would face the modern environment and challenges together with the wisdom learned from ancestors’ experiences of thousands of years.

Minister Amenta Matthew said that it has been nearly 20 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the Marshall Islands in 1998. The bilateral exchanges between Taiwan and the Marshall Islands were quite close and unique because both share the values of democracy and freedom, as well as the deep roots of the Austronesian Peoples’ culture. The Minister also pledged that, through the signing of this Agreement, she would work more closely with the Council to promote the preservation of the culture of the Austronesian people, which was the right direction and would further strengthen the substantive exchanges between both sides.

Chairman Icyang further pointed out that the Agreement was approved by the Executive Yuan at the end of last year. It was the first bilateral cooperation agreement signed with friendly countries in the Pacific since the founding of the Council of Indigenous Peoples. It was also the first bilateral cooperation agreement on ethnic and cultural affairs in Austronesian peoples after the launching of the “Austronesian Forum”. The two countries would continue to implement the contents of the Agreement and jointly promote the various cooperation plans of the Austronesian Forum, thereby promoting the sustainable development of Austronesian culture circle.
