In recognition of the great contribution of the elder Masa Tohui, the preserver of oral tradition of the Atayal people, to the promotion and inheritance of the Atayal culture, Iwan Nawi, Deputy Director of the Council of Indigenous Peoples, attended his memorial ceremony in person on 23 January and presented the Presidential Praise Order as well as Indigenous Class 3 National Professional Medal on behalf of the Council, which were received by his children, Huang, Shu-Wei and Huang, Chi-Ching, on behalf of their family.
Iwan Nawi expressed deep regret for the death of Masa Tohui. Masa Tohui’s has contributed to the revitalization of indigenous culture throughout his life. He had participated in and promoted the Atayal culture with practical actions and spared no effort in the works of cultural inheritance and preservation. In 2007, he won the 14th Global Chinese Culture and Art Salary Award, which greatly enriched the culture of Indigenous Peoples in Taiwan. On September 25, 2015, he was declared by Taoyuan City Government as the preserver of Atayal oral tradition, a cultural asset of “Traditional Art”. Masa Tohui had made great contributions to the social and cultural development of Indigenous Peoples. He was honored with the Presidential Praise Order and Indigenous Class 3 National Professional Medal of Indigenous Peoples in order to express his great contribution to the country.
Masa Tohui died on February 3, 2019 at the age of 88. His dedication to protecting and inheriting the traditional arts of Taiwan’s Indigenous Peoples and promoting the rooting and inheritance of indigenous culture was highly commendable for leaving valuable assets for Taiwan.
